23. 01. 2023

Young violinists up to the age of 16 years may take part in Kocian Violin Competition.

1st category: year of birth 2015 and younger

2nd category: year of birth 2014 and 2013

3rd category: year of birth 2012 and 2011

4th category: year of birth 2010 and 2009

The definite classification of the competitors will be determined by the year of birth.

The competition jury is appointed by the organizer based on the jury’s statute. The jury is international. Contestants have no right to object to the composition of the jury.

In the 1st category the competition is one round only. In the 2nd, 3rd and 4th category there are 2 rounds. All rounds of all categories are public.

Contestants of the 1st category will play the compulsory piece and their free program (time limit for the free program is 4 — 8 minutes) during one performance. The time limit is for the free program only — it does not include the Melody by Jaroslav Kocian. The free program mustn’t be shorter than 4 minutes, as it would be a reason for a disqualification. The order of compositions is arbitrary.

First round of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th category is anonymous, contestants will perform under numbers and will play the compulsory composition. The jury will select best contestants, who will proceed to the second round and play their free program. The time limit for each category is as follows:

8 — 13 mins in the 2nd category

12 — 20 mins in the 3rd category

14 — 20 mins in the 4th category

Please note, that the lower time limit must be met — your total playing time in the second round mustn’t be shorter than 8, 12 or 14 minutes respectively, as this would be a reason for a disqualification. The time limit for each category is understood as a pure playing time (not the entire time you spend on the stage).

In case of exceeding given time limit the jury may stop the competitor even before they have finished their performance. All pieces must be played from memory.

Both the compulsory and free-choice pieces must be performed from memory. Contestants perform in the order drawn before the start of their respective categories. Contestants who do not arrive on time will not be allowed to compete. The drawing of lots for the second round takes place after the announcement of the first round results in each category.

No more than 15 contestants can proceed to the second round. Those who will not proceed will receive a Certificate of Participation at the announcement of results. In the second round the jury in entitled to award the first to third prize and the Certificate of Merit of the first to third grade. Finally, the jury will proclaim the absolute winner of the competition who can use the title ‘Laureate of the Kocian Violin Competition’.

The jury in entitled to award other special prizes and acknowledgments.
