Festivalový ředitel Pavel Šporcl nově vede i odbornou porotu:
„Kocianka je mou srdcovkou“
V posledních letech je nejvýraznější tváří Kocianova Ústí, v jehož rámci se koná již 64. ročník mezinárodní houslové soutěže. Festival i klání talentovaných umělců přitom v uplynulých dvou letech čelilo nebývale těžké zkoušce. V roce 2020 se kvůli první vlně covidové epidemie nemohl největší ústecký hudební svátek konat vůbec, loni jej organizační tým uspořádal v online podobě, aby desítky let opečovávaná tradice neutrpěla ještě více. Zdá se, že jednu velkou výzvu pořadatelé úspěšně zdolali. „Jsem moc rád, že se letos konáme, jak se říká, v plné polní. Vzhledem k postcovidové situaci a ruské agresi na Ukrajině se sice nepřihlásilo tolik účastníků tolik jako v minulých letech, i tak je pro mne ovšem týden v Ústí odměnou a svátkem,“ říká umělecký ředitel Kocianova Ústí Pavel Šporcl, který letos poprvé rovněž předsedá odborné porotě.
Multižánrový 17. ročník festivalu
Festivalový program začal v pondělí 2. května v kostele Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, kde se ústeckému publiku představil Pavel Šporcl po boku Barocco sempre giovane. Pardubický komorní soubor nebude chybět ani v programu pátečního koncertu, který bude věnován další významné osobnosti Kocianky. „Emeritní předseda poroty pan profesor Štraus má letos životní jubileum, které chceme oslavit společně s ním. Napadla mne myšlenka, že by vynikajícímu pedagogovi mohli zahrát právě jeho studenti. Vzhledem k tomu, že jedna z protagonistek Eva Zrostlíková onemocněla, tak se pan profesor nabídl, že osobně na koncertu vystoupí. V nové skladbě Lukáše Sommera Gala Kocian, která byla napsána speciálně pro tento koncert, se tedy představí i náš jubilant,“ hovoří o jednom z festivalových lákadel jeho ředitel.
Ten při tvorbě programu letošního 17. ročníku pamatoval také na dalšího z předsedů poroty, nedávno zesnulého Pavla Hůlu. Úterní vystoupení Bennewitzova kvarteta, jež mělo původně připomenout výročí založení Kocianova kvarteta, bylo v 
sále Hernychovy vily věnováno právě jeho dlouholetému primáriovi. „Pavla jsme měli všichni moc rádi, byl v hudebním světě respektován a pro propagaci Kocianova jména udělal nesmírně mnoho,“ je si vědom Šporcl.
Jak dále podotýká, i letošní Kocianovo Ústí ctí multižánrovou dramaturgii. Zatímco například před čtyřmi roky zavítali do Roškotova divadla bratři Ebenové, letos to bude další ze stálic naší populární hudby – Jitka Zelenková. Přitom již o den dříve se představil na stejném místě ústeckému publiku po boku pardubických filharmoniků první „online laureát“ v dějinách Kocianovy soutěže – loňský vítěz 2. kategorie Kai Gergov. „Je skvělé, že soutěž dává talentům možnost zahrát si s orchestrem, natočit nahrávku, je to velmi důležitý aspekt začátku kariéry. Naši laureáti jsou ve svých kategoriích naprosté špičky, a proto se Kocianka řadí mezi soutěže top kvality. Kromě loňské nahrávky jsem měl možnost slyšet Kaie i naživo, je to opravdu mimořádný talent,“ oceňuje mladého umělce jeho starší kolega.
V čele poroty pouze letos, nebo i do budoucna?
Náhlé úmrtí předsedy poroty Pavla Hůly, svěřence Kocianovy žačky Marie Hlouňové, postavilo organizační tým soutěže před nelehký úkol najít jeho nástupce, ideálně též z kocianovské linie. Jméno Pavla Šporcla se v této souvislosti již v minulosti skloňovalo, sám umělec se rozhodl hozenou rukavici zvednout. „Tento rok ukáže, zda budu všechny aktivity stíhat. Kocianka je mou srdcovkou, rád bych jí pomáhal do budoucna. Pokud mi to ostatní pracovní povinnosti dovolí, budu pokračovat v tom, co započal pan profesor Snítil a v čem pokračoval i Pavel Hůla,“ zní z úst novopečeného předsedy poroty, který dodává: „Soutěž má každý rok krásnou atmosféru, hodně se snažíme o to, aby byla rodinná, aby to nebylo jen o soutěžení. I letos budeme mít na závěrečném koncertu soutěžní orchestr.“
Ve stínu epidemie a války
Pavel Šporcl v rozhovoru pro zpravodaj připouští, že ani po překonání covidových trablí nemá Kocianka zdaleka na růžích ustláno. Na svět umění totiž po pandemii dopadla s velkou tíhou také ruská agrese na Ukrajině. „Bohužel si myslím, že celá kultura stále velmi trpí, speciálně klasická hudba či divadlo. Čtrnáct dní, měsíc to vypadalo nadějně, jenže s vypuknutím konfliktu euforie opadla. Lidé často nemají prostředky a hlavně všeobecný strach, který kolem nás panuje, určitě nám umělcům nenapomáhá,“ připouští Pavel Šporcl a pokračuje: „Ani jsme si nedovedli představit, že je něco takového možné, tím, že jsme blízko, to vnímáme daleko intenzivněji. Mezi zabitými ve válce jsou i umělci, je mi to nesmírně líto, celá situace je prostě příšerná.“
Ani v nastalé situaci ale neskládá zbraně, přesněji řečeno své modré housle. Je totiž přesvědčen, že kulturní svět všechny otřesy dokáže přestát. „Nejsem pesimista, ale veskrze pozitivní člověk, stále vidím světlo na konci tunelu. Naše společnost během pandemie finančně vykrvácela, přesto teď z velké části úžasně podporuje ukrajinské uprchlíky, stejně jako naše vláda,“ oceňuje virtuos počínání politiků i běžných občanů.
Přes všechna omezení byly poslední dva roky pro patrona Kocianky a jejího laureáta z roku 1986 ve znamení rozmanitých aktivit, právě ty jsou podle Pavla Šporcla klíčem k pozitivnímu myšlení. Online koncerty, návrat na pódia v Česku i zahraničí, k jednomu americkému turné brzy přibudou dvě další. „Napsal jsem knihu, natočil desku, teď už druhou, jíž vzdávám hold dalšímu našemu velikánovi Janu Kubelíkovi a hraji světovou premiéru jeho prvního houslového koncertu. Nedokážu se nudit, umělecky jsem nestrádal v tom smyslu, že bych měl založené ruce. Mám úžasnou rodinu a housličky, které dělají radost mnoha lidem,“ nachází pozitiva Pavel Šporcl a odhodlaně dodává: „Kultura nevymřela a nevymře, přes nelehkou situaci to zvláneme. Musíme věřit, že covid i válka pominou, že si budeme moct na chvilku odpočinout od starostí, se kterými jako jedinci nemůžeme příliš mnoho udělat. Posláním nás umělců je předávat lidem duchovní a duševní zážitky, snad k tomu budeme mít dostatek příležitostí.“
“Kocianka, dear to my heart”
For the past few years, he has been the main face of the Kocian Ústí festival, which is now holding its 64th international violin competition. The festival and the competition themselves faced a heavy trial in the last two years. In 2020, the biggest musical event in Ústí could not take place due to the pandemic of COVID-19. Last year it took place completely online in order to keep the long-standing tradition alive. It seemed that the organizers managed to successfully overcome one of the obstacles. “I am pleased that the competition is happening in its entirety this year. Due to post-covid issues and the current situation in Ukraine, there are not as many contestants as in previous years, but I still view this week in Ústí as a reward and a celebration,” comments the art director of the festival, Pavel Šporcl, who is also a jury chairman this year.
17th Multi-Genre Festival
The festival programme started on Monday, May 2nd, in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where Pavel Šporcl performed alongside the chamber ensemble Barocco sempre giovane. This ensemble from Pardubice will also perform on Friday, the concert will be dedicated to another prominent figure of Kocianka. “An emeritus jury chairman, professor Straus, celebrates his life jubilee this year; and we want to celebrate it with him. And what could be better than having his own students perform for him. One of the performers, Eva Zrostlíková, sadly fell ill. The professor then agreed to perform at the concert himself, meaning that the man of the hour will also take part in performing a new composition called Gala Kocian by Lukáš Sommer, which was specifically composed for this event,” says the festival director.
When creating the programme for the 17th festival, the director remembered yet another jury chairman, Pavel Hůla, who passed away recently. The Bennewitz Quartet performance on Tuesday in Hernych Villa was dedicated to him, instead of the formerly planned dedication to the Kocian Quartet anniversary. “We all loved Pavel, he was a respected member of the music world and he had a great impact on promoting the Kocian name,” Šporcl comments.
He adds that this year’s Kocian Ústí festival also carries a multi-genre dramaturgy. Four years ago, we could see the band Bratři Ebenové perform in Roškot Theatre; this year, for instance, there will be a chance to see another prominent figure of our popular music – Jitka Zelenková. A day prior to that, there is a performance by Pardubice Philharmonic and the very first “online laureate”, Kai Gergov, who is the last year’s 2nd category winner. “It is great that the competition gives the musicians a chance to play with orchestras, make a record; it is an important factor at the beginning of their careers. Our laureates are on top of their categories, therefore, Kocianka is considered to be a high-quality competition. Apart from the last year’s recording, we also had a chance to hear Kai perform live, he really has a unique talent,” comments the artist’s older colleague.
A jury chairman for this year only, or for the following years as well?
The sudden passing of the jury chairman Pavel Hůla, a ward of one of the Kocian’s students – Marie Hlouňová, has presented the organizers with the tricky task of finding his successor, ideally from the Kocian’s lineage. The name of Pavel Šporcl was discussed in the past, and the artist himself decided to answer the call. “This year will be a trial for me, whether I can manage all my activities. Kocianka is very dear to my heart, I would like to be of assistance in the following years. If my other work responsibilities permit, I will continue in the work of professor Snítil and Pavel Hůla,” says the new jury chairman, and adds: “The competition atmosphere every year is spectacular. We strive for it to be familiar, not only competitive. At this year’s final concert there will again perform a competition orchestra.”
In the shadow of a pandemic and war
Pavel Šporcl admits that even after overcoming the obstacles of the pandemic, the competition is not out of the woods yet. The world of art has been heavily affected by the Russian aggression in Ukraine as well. “I think that the culture as a whole is still suffering, especially classical music and theatre. The situation looked promising for about two weeks or a month, but the euphoria quickly died with the conflict eruption. People do not have resources and there is this constant fear all around us, which does not help us, artists. We could not even imagine that something like this could happen, and as we are located so near, we perceive these issues with more intensity. Among the people killed in this war, there were artists as well, that pains me a lot, this whole situation is horrible,” he says.
Despite the current situation, he is not laying down his arms, namely his blue violin. He is convinced that the cultural world can withstand any storm. “I am not a pessimist, I am more of a positive person, I still see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our society sustained heavy financial damages during the pandemic, but we still largely support Ukrainian refugees, as our government does,” he appreciates the actions of civilians and politicians.
Despite all the restrictions, the last two years have been a time full of various activities for the Kocianka patron and its 1986 laureate. These activities are, according to Šporcl himself, the key to a positive mindset. Online concerts, the return on the stage in the Czech Republic and abroad, the American tour, soon to be accompanied by two more. “I wrote a book, recorded a new album (now my second), in which I pay tribute to Jan Kubelík, and I play the world’s premiere of his first violin concert. I am unable to get bored, I did not suffer artistically because I never stopped moving. I have a wonderful family and a violin that brings joy to so many people. The culture has not died and it will not happen, we will prevail even despite the difficult situation. We must believe that the pandemic and war will pass, that we will have a chance to catch our breath and relax from the things that we alone cannot change. Our mission as artists is to provide people with spiritual experience, I hope that we will have a chance to do so.”
