Ještě před zahájením 64. ročníku Kocianovy houslové soutěže se uskutečnil koncert věnovaný jedné z největších jejích osobností. Pavel Hůla se do listiny vítězů zapsal hned dvakrát, a to v letech 1963 a 1964. V polovině 70. let se stal členem kvarteta, které
záhy přijalo do svého názvu jméno Mistra Kociana a neuvěřitelných 36 let propagovalo jeho odkaz po celém světě. Vedle toho začal pražský rodák ještě intenzivněji spolupracovat se soutěží, na níž získal své první úspěchy – nejprve od roku 2001 jako člen odborné poroty, posledních deset let pak ve funkci předsedy. V rámci jubilejního 60. ročníku Kocianky vydal Pavel Hůla publikaci mapující jeho profesní život i dějiny soutěže, o rok později obdržel Cenu města Ústí nad Orlicí. Nevyléčitelné nemoci vzdoroval 9 let, zemřel 7. prosince 2021 a 23. ledna letošního roku, v den nedožitých 70. narozenin, uctili jeho památku posluchači a protagonisté vzpomínkového koncertu v pražském Sále Martinů.
Další hudební vzpomínku věnovali „svému Pavlovi“ Ústečtí v úterý 3. května. Druhý festivalový koncert, vystoupení Bennewitzova kvarteta v Hernychově vile, měl být původně připomínkou vzniku Kocianova kvarteta. „Vzhledem ke smutným nedávným událostem a úmrtí Pavla Hůly jsme se rozhodli tímto koncertem vzdát hold právě jemu, vynikajícímu houslistovi a člověku,“ uvedl ředitel festivalu Kocianovo Ústí Pavel Šporcl, nástupce Pavla Hůly ve funkci předsedy odborné poroty.
V úterý podvečer zněly secesním sálem skladby, které měl Pavel Hůla v oblibě a které Kocianovci často hrávali na svých koncertech: Haydnův Smyčcový kvartet C dur, Pět kusů pro smyčcové kvarteto Erwina Schulhoffa a v neposlední řadě Dvořákův Smyčcový kvartet G dur. Závěrečné standing ovation si “vynutilo” přídavek v podobě druhé věty proslulého Dvořákova “amerického” kvartetu, vůbec nejhranější skladby v repertoáru Kocianovců.
Bez zajímavosti není, že na třetí květnový den připadají další dvě významná výročí úzce spjatá s úterním koncertem. Prvním z nich je 110 let od narození Marie Hlouňové, významné české houslistky, pedagožky a žačky Mistra Kociana, u níž Pavel Hůla studoval na pražské AMU a která měla zásadní vliv na rozvoj jeho houslové hry. 3. května 1922, tedy právě před sto lety, se narodil Josef Hůla, otec Pavla Hůly. Zakladatel Českého komorního orchestru a pedagog byl s Kocianovou houslovou soutěží dlouhá léta také neodmyslitelně spjat.
Even before the start of the 64th Kocian Violin Competition, there was a concert dedicated to one of its major figures. Pavel Hůla won the competition twice, in 1963 and 1964. In the mid-70s, he became a member of a quartet, which was shortly named after Master Kocian, and they were promoting this name for the next 36 years all over the world. Hůla, formerly from Prague, then started to cooperate with the competition even more intensively. Later, he earned his success, firstly as a jury member in 2001, and for the last 10 years as a jury chairman. On the 60th year jubilee of the competition, he published a book describing his professional life and the competition’s history. A year later, he received an Ústí nad Orlicí City Award. He had been fighting an incurable illness for 9 years and died on December 7th, 2021. On January 23rd this year, on the day of his 70th birthday, there was a commemoration concert in Prague Martin Hall.
Another commemoration took place on May 3rd in Ústí. The second festival concert of the Bennewitz Quartet in Hernych’s Villa was originally meant to be a commemoration of the Kocian Quartet’s founding. “Considering this sad news about his passing, we decided to pay him, an excellent violinist and person, a tribute,” said the director of the Kocian Ústí festival Pavel Šporcl, who is the successor of Pavel Hůla in the jury chairman position.
On Tuesday evening we could hear Hůla’s favourite compositions, which were often played by Kocian lineage musicians at concerts: Haydn’s String Quartet C Major, Five Pieces for String Quartet by Erwin Schulhoff, and, last but not least, Dvořák’s String Quartet G Major. After a major standing ovation, there was an encore of Dvořák’s String Quartet, American.
It is important to note that on May 3rd there are two other significant anniversaries connected with the concert. The first is the 110-years anniversary of the birth of Marie Hlouňová, a great Czech violinist, pedagogue, and student of Master Kocian. Also, Pavel Hůla was her student at AMU (The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, transl. comm.) and she greatly influenced his violin play. On May 3rd, 1922, exactly 100 years ago, Josef Hůla, Pavel Hůla’s father, was born. He established the Czech Chamber Orchestra and was, for many years, an inseparable part of the competition.
